Is Paying Someone for SEO Worth It?
September 2, 2026
This usually comes down to a time-versus-money tradeoff, not a question of whether SEO itself works. SEO can absolutely be done in-house by a motivated business owner, the real question is whether that's the best use of your specific time, given everything else running a trade business already demands from you.
When DIY makes sense
- You have the time to consistently learn and apply SEO fundamentals over several months
- Your site is small enough that the workload is manageable alongside everything else you do
- Budget is genuinely tight and time is more available to you than money right now
- You enjoy this kind of work and don't mind the learning curve involved
When hiring out makes sense
- Your time is better spent running the business, quoting jobs, managing crews, than learning and executing SEO
- The site or competitive landscape is complex enough that real expertise meaningfully speeds up results
- You've tried DIY and hit a plateau you can't diagnose or fix on your own
- You've calculated that your own hourly value on billable trade work exceeds what hiring out would cost
There's no universally right answer. A solo business owner with limited time often gets more value from paying for expertise than from spending their own scarce hours on a discipline that takes months to learn well, especially when those same hours could go toward actual paying jobs. On the other hand, a business with more flexibility and genuine curiosity about marketing can build real, lasting in-house capability by starting with DIY.
What DIY SEO actually requires in practice
If you go the DIY route, be realistic about the ongoing time commitment. It's not a weekend project, it usually means a regular cadence of updating your Google Business Profile, writing or overseeing new content, checking for technical issues, and tracking what's working, month after month, for a sustained stretch of time. Many business owners underestimate this and end up doing it in bursts, a flurry of activity followed by months of neglect, which tends to produce weaker results than a smaller but consistent effort.
A middle ground worth considering
You don't have to choose fully DIY or fully hired out. Some business owners handle their own Google Business Profile and review responses, which cost time but not money, while paying a freelancer or agency for the more technical and content-heavy work that benefits from real expertise. This can stretch a limited budget further while still keeping you personally involved in the parts of local SEO that are easiest to manage yourself.
