SEO on TikTok: How Discovery Actually Works

August 31, 2026

A growing share of users, especially younger ones, search TikTok the way earlier generations searched Google, typing a question directly into the app. That's made 'TikTok SEO' a real consideration for businesses trying to be discovered there, even ones that don't think of themselves as a natural fit for the platform. Local service businesses in particular are often surprised by how well a simple, informative video can perform, since there's far less competition for practical, local content than for entertainment content.

What TikTok's system reads

  • Captions, write them like search-friendly copy, not just a punchline
  • On-screen text within the video itself, which TikTok can read and use for relevance
  • Spoken audio, which TikTok can also transcribe and factor into search matching
  • Hashtags, relevant, specific ones, not generic high-volume tags disconnected from the content

What still drives discovery

Beyond text signals, TikTok's recommendation system heavily weighs watch time and completion rate, similar to YouTube. A video that clearly and quickly delivers on what its caption promises tends to outperform one that's technically well-tagged but doesn't hold attention. For a business, that usually means leading with the useful information immediately rather than building up to it, viewers decide within the first second or two whether to keep watching or scroll past.

Getting started without overthinking it

A business doesn't need a large following or polished production to benefit from posting on TikTok, a phone camera and a genuinely useful answer to a common customer question is enough to start. Posting consistently, even a couple of times a month, tends to matter more than any single video going viral, since the app's discovery system keeps surfacing content from accounts that post regularly to new viewers over time.

A mistake to avoid

Trying to imitate trends or humor that doesn't fit the business often falls flat and can come across as inauthentic. Straightforward, useful content, explaining a service, showing a completed job, answering a real question, tends to perform better for a local business than chasing whatever trend is popular that week, and it's also far easier to keep producing consistently.

Turning TikTok content into more than one asset

A short video made for TikTok can usually be reused, posted to Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts, embedded on a website's service page, or clipped into a Google Business Profile post. That means the time spent making one useful video doesn't have to pay off on a single platform alone, and a business unsure whether TikTok's audience overlaps with its customers can still get value from the content itself even if the app never becomes a major traffic source.
